About Me

Laura McCarthy, PhD, LMFTEducation
I attended the Counselor Education program at the University of Florida, which is consistently rated among the top 5 programs in the nation for counselor preparation. I earned my M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees in Marriage and Family Counseling in 2002, and earned my Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Counseling in 2006.

Experience
I have been happily working in private practice for many years now, and love the flexibility to tailor therapy to meet the unique needs of the clients I serve. I also appreciated opportunities I had prior to entering private practice, and learned a great deal from providing therapy in a variety of settings including outpatient offices, in-home family therapy, and a residential treatment center for children.

  • Couples:  I love working with couples, and couples therapy has been a major focus of my work in private practice. No relationship is "easy," as relationships naturally push all our buttons and show us where we still have work to do. Relationships need continuous effort and growth, and nowhere are we as vulnerable as we are with our partners. At the same time, relationships provide one of our greatest sources of support as we go through the challenges of life; we truly are wired for connection and can achieve so much when we can count on our partner to be in our corner. I am honored to be part of the process in helping couples improve their relationships and resolve differences regarding communication, parenting, relationship crises, sexuality, and life-transitions.
  • Individuals:  I have worked with a variety of individuals from older children/tweens/teens and college-aged adults to retirees, addressing issues such as life-transitions, anxiety, depression, self-discovery, and relationship issues.

Personal:  I have been married for more than 25 years and have 2 kids. I am a Colorado native, and love camping and exploring nature. I enjoy watching movies, reading novels, and scrapbooking (if I can ever find the time!). My husband owns a pinball arcade in Conifer, so I'm often there to hang out with him and to help out at the front desk or with minor fixes of games. On weekends, I'm frequently attending women's pinball tournaments, as I do have a bit of a competitive side. I especially love when my kids are visiting us or when I get the chance to travel to see them; my youngest is pursuing a math degree in Chicago, and my oldest is launching his acting career in New York.
